Something Interesting with iPhone's camera

It’s been a long time since I have written the previous post, actually I have been busy with my semesters. Exams, exams and more exams that’s what was going on since last two months.

Coming to the point I have started another tumble-blog and will be posting on it starting today.

It’s called Baked on iPhone. Ya, you read that right…Recently I got myself an iPhone 4 and I am completely in love with it. It’s 5MP camera and that’s where the story begins…The whole blog will be based on the snaps that I take with it.

You may ask, why do I need to create a separate blog, services like Instagram does the same job efficiently, but I don’t want the photos that I’ll take should be limited to other iPhone owners and my twitter followers and I will also not be posting images only from Instagram, it can be from Camera+ etc…

I love photography and without a DSLR this photography thing looks kiddish, but still the iPhone lets me fulfill my hunger. So, bookmark this blog and I promise I will be updating atleast once every week, till then happy photo-snapping!!

After lot of hesitation and doubts about purchasing Apple TV and that too for a guy who lives in India where Apple TV is mostly paralyzed, I gave a last thought about it and decided to get one.

As usual Apple TV was not available in India, so I needed to find out a way to get it from US and for your information I don’t have any uncle or brother living in US, so now the only way to get one is via online sites those offering to ship US products to India. And first that came in my mind was 20North. And I was thinking to buy something from that site long ago and got a perfect excuse also. So, I searched for Apple TV, found one but it was selling for twice the US price, hesitated but at the end ordered one.

Now waiting period started, after 3 days I asked them about the status of my order and they replied that

Dear Samrat,

We are writing to inform you that the merchant has shipped your product to our warehouse in the US , However, it take 21 working days for delivery.

So, I thought by January 10th or 12th I will get my order shipped to me. On January 3rd, I asked them to provide me a tracking code, they replied by saying that

Hello Samrat,

Thank you for writing in.

Your Order ID : 988433424900 is being shipped out of the US this week.
Once in local transit, you will receive a local tracking ID.

I was little disappointed that they haven’t yet shipped my order but I was ok later realizing I have been provided a time frame of 21 days. Again after few exchange of mails, they sent me another shocking news on January 8

Hi, Samrat,

Thank you for writing in to 20North.

I have included a status for your order with 20North as below:

Order ID : 988433424900

[B001FA1NK0 Apple TV MC572LL/A (2010)]

Status: This order has not yet been dispatched from the US and is now
estimated to leave by next weekend.

I was angry by that time and requested them to cancel my order and refund me back, but they said I can do so only after January 16(where 21 working days end)

The delivery time is 21 business days (excluding Saturdays and Sundays), if the item does not reach you by the 16/01/11 then we will surely cancel and refund the full amount paid. Please note that if you cancel before that time, you will not get a full refund as per our cancellation policy.

Then I mailed them the following reply

Hello,

You guys even know that my order is not going to be in front of my door by 16/1/2011 as it is still not shipped from US. So why don’t you guys refund me my money back and I try looking it somewhere else. I am completely dissatisfied by your service and false promises, just give me my money back. You guys don’t mean business.

Then I also got confirmation about my cancellation

Your Order ID : 988433424900 has been sent for a cancellation and 100% refund via Paypal. I will confirm when the same has been affected.

Please write back with your confirmation or for any clarifications.

But, after a day Charmaine from 20North called me and apologized and requested me to wait till next week and promised me that my order will be in front of my door step, I some how agreed.
Then on January 17th I recieved the following mail

Hi, Samrat,

Thank you for writing in to 20North Customer Support! I have good news!

Your Order ID : 988433424900 has cleared customs and is being dispatched to our 20North office tomorrow. The reason we are having it redirected here is because there are delays with Aramex delivering to Orrisa. So, I do not want your order delayed any further, we will receive it here in 20North and then send it via another courier.

Your Kingmiles and your will be credited once the order has been delivered.

Please write back with any concerns.

I said ok that’s fine, they are really trying hard to get me my order as soon as possible, but to my horror those stupid people at 20North shipped my order via Aramex.
On January 19, they mailed me stating that

Hi, Samrat,
Thank you for writing back.
Please understand that it is not just one item or one courierconsignment it is 100s. However, your order has been dispatched viaAramex AWB# 6212659095 on 18/01/2011. You can track the same on www.aramex.com, however, since it was just picked up the data may notbe updated as yet.Please write back with any queries.

I was surprised and annoyed that they are shipping via Aramex, then what’s the point shipping it to 20North office why they didn’t directly shipped that to me. When I mailed them for explanation to the above, they said if Aramex will delay my order they will call back the order by tomorrow. I knew they are playing with me, I had nothing to do just wait and watch there drama.
After 4 days, my order was stuck in Kolkata and was not moving and again after malling them back, they said they are looking on that. But my order got delayed by 8 more days by Aramex and they again called the order back to their Chennai office. I wanted to call them and say something nasty but I tried my best to avoid telephonic conversation and keep everything in written.I got another mail from them on February 1

Hi, Samrat,

I have escalated this issue to the concerned department to expedite the delivery and will write back to you either today or tomorrow.

I am very sorry for all the distress you have been through on this order.

Then on February 3rd I got a call from same Charmaine from 20North, she said that my order is lost in transition!! This was the last thing I expected to hear from them. I controlled and calmed down myself. They said they will be refunding me my money back on Monday(7th February).

Summary
20North is the worst online online retailer I have came across, they simply don’t mean business they are better known for harassing people and giving false promises. Just do a simple Google search “20North review” and you will get the idea. I haven’t yet received my refund back and hope will get by Monday.

Update:

Received the refund on 9th February and that overs my relationship with 20North.

Most awesome Alarm Clock ever

Here, I am back to start bitching about another #fail gadget I own. Nearly a month back my mom gifted my father a Blackberry Curve 8520 on their wedding anniversary. Me happy, my mom happy but it was not the same with my father, my father hates phone with so many buttons, but he promised that he will start using the phone in a day or two but that day never came and that’s what made me decide to experience Blackberry phone and its (awe)some services. After getting permission from my mom, I got a new Tata Docomo connection with Blackberry service by spending Rs 900 + some talk-time value. This is how my journey towards Blackberry experience started.

First day:

I kept my iPhone aside and started playing with my papa’s all new Blackberry and all it’s services. Keyboard gave me some problem at first as I was used to a touch screen device but it was ok after few minutes of usage. As usual habit of geek, I tried to exploit as much as I can for near about a month.

Experience:

The bad part-

After using the phone for more than 10 days I realized, this phone is not for me as I didn’t got anything more, most of the services it provided was already there present on my iPhone. Now you may be asking me about the Push mail thing, really iPhone does in a better way, I get push notification(Boxcar) on it as soon as mail arrives to my inbox, after which according to the priority of the mail I open mail App. And the Blackberry Messenger is a good concept, but it was hardly any useful for me as most of my important contacts were using Nokia or iPhone( and Textie was the way to go) . Other than these two features Blackberry had no other feature to woo about. The Blackberry App World is a joke in front of Apple App Store, it has hardly any useful App and in India I had only access to the free Apps.

The good part-

Only one thing that impressed me was the Alarm application, it was by far the best App that Blackberry has ever invented. The App looks great and works great even. “Bedside Mode” is another awesome feature I like. I have been using this Alarm for near about a month and it works perfect. I should admit that it is the best Alarm device I have ever seen till date. I have never missed my morning walks and all credit goes to the Alarm App.

I must say: ” I have spent nearly about Rs 15K on best Alarm device in the world”.

My say:

So, if you have ever used iPhone in your life and you have some more money in your piggy bank, then go out and get this best Alarm device made ever, this makes you wake up earlier and makes you slim even. Or else never look at a Blackberry device ever.

And to all Blackberry fanboys: “Get a iPhone, get a life”.

“Patience is virtue” whoever said it, really meant it. Waiting for iPad for more than two months, then receiving an iPad which has been pre-jailbroken surprised me. The iPad was factory sealed and no one would believed this was a used product, to verify that I am the first owner or not, I even checked for smudges and fingerprints on the screen but found none, the iPad booted up and worked for first time without even being connected to any PC/Mac. Confused, puzzled, amazed & worried, I was unable to decode the mystery of my unusual factory sealed iPad.

This is how the story started, then I installed the Apps I had previously purchased and synced it, it ran without any issue, ineptly I opened the Cydia App and suddenly all the old memories I spent with my jailbroken iPhone erupted in my mind. Leaving all that, I spent quite time on Google to find a positive use of this jailbroken thing on my iPad. Eureka!! I got the most awesome reason to get an iPad jailbroken and that was Hackulous.

Using hackulous is like a piece of cake, you can find how to install it by doing a simple Google search or else here is the YouTube link for newbies out there. The video shows that the App downloaded via this process doesn’t have App icons, but that’s no more now. Some Apps may not run, but after you restart your iPad it works well.

The Shadow Part

Some people out there will be quite excited by this hack, but this kind of things leads to the fall of a good and definite AppStore. Sorry developers and other guys who are selling Apps, I only mean that this post will generate some awareness and I don’t want to take away your bread and butter. As it is said after knowing the good part and evil part of a thing, we can start bulding some thing more constructive. Forget the “Patience is Virtue” part, it’s always not good for all.

(Note:- The author doesn’t encourage readers to download Apps via this process, to maintain the harmony and essence of AppStore, do go for the official way)

No Find My iPhone for pre-built iPhone OS 4.0

After upgrading to pre-built version of iPhone OS 4.0, I have noticed that Find My iPhone has stopped working first of all I thought it was temporary but I was wrong from the following chat with a MobileMe Chat support I figured out that Find My iPhone doesn’t works with iPhone OS 4.0.

And another important thing I found out that the final release of iPhone OS 4.0 will be out by late June or July, I think it will be around the time of launch of next generation iPhone . And that dumb didn’t figured out how I was running iPhone OS 4.0.

Total fucking day of my life

Today was one of the fuckiest(sorry need to use this adjective) day of my life, I realized what a big loser am I.

This is the chronology of events that occurred:-

Someone stole my fucking scientific calculator( Rs 700 wasted )
I screwed up my physics viva
Fucking Veg biryani I ate was like shit
Was not able to attend second half in college due to loose motion
Internet connection was down
Nip of my pen broke down and flooded my pencil box & my hand also with fucking ink
Kolkata Knight Riders lost the match
A fucking stupid fly fell on my dinner and I had to sleep on empty stomach

And till now I am able to post this, God this day do not come again…..

When Shah Rukh Khan refused, and rightly so, they threatened to disallow screenings of his latest film My Name is Khan—which, ironically enough, is about racial profiling of Muslims in USA—in Maharashtra. First day of 2nd semester

As usual today I was pretty excited about my 1st day of 2nd Sem, as in previous 15 days I was total lackadaisical and at all not productive. Somehow I managed to woke up early and went to college, and the first thing I did was I opened Foursquare and Gowalla to update my status and even foursquare made me the Mayor of my college(and now what kind of discounts do I expect being the Mayor).

And after that first three classes were interesting and the professors seemed good. And in lunch few of my friends went to college canteen and ate Masala Dosa and i bet it was the worst dosa I have ever ate.

And now left the last three periods which was Business Communication Lab, which I thought would be interesting but at first it was damn boring and after nearly two hours I felt little interested after the professor started interacting and he even asked us to write 60 words on ” What do you mean by engineering ” ROFL, it was great laugh and I took little help from my iPhone, Oops!!

Atlast it was a nice start to my 2nd Sem and I hope this time I will perform better.

(NB: I tried my best to use worst English to write this, don’t ask me why )

A Day Without iPhone

Quite unimaginable!!

Here’s how it started:-

While talking with one of my friend yesterday, who is a very big Nokia and Windows fan(inversely proportional to me), he challenged me not to use my iPhone for a day and to experience symbian, I first reject his challenge but later accepted it.

Morning:

I woke up at 6am and the first thing I do usually is to switch on my iPhone, but today I went towards my iPhone took out the SIM card and got hold of Papa’s Nokia N79 and inserted it. Then I switched it on, the stupid Nokia startup sound and all blah.blah.. But the best part I found that it booted really fast. I thought of upgrading the firmware of it, but Nokia Software Updater doesn’t works with Windows 7 nor Mac, the only option left was updating it via WiFi, but it was in a no mood to enter my WiFi zone, I was too much fed up and failed it to connect it to my Home WiFi network and after many trials I left for college.

In College:

Many friends got shocked after seeing my phone, and I was forced to explain them why I am with N79. In recess I scanned for WiFi, it showed to two access points, quite amazingly this time I was able to get in and all worked fine. But the thing is that when I search for WiFi networks on iPhone in same area, I do not get one. After some browsing I installed few 3rd party Apps and even tried them, few were pretty good but they had painful UI.

Back to Home:

Now surprisingly, this time N79 got connected to my Home WiFi network and I updated the firmware and downloaded some free tracks from Nokia Music Store.

The Ovi Experience:

After opening Ovi store I realized that it had hardly 30 Apps that is easily accessible and can viewed by a normal users, for other Apps you need to search them. The store is very badly designed with full of crappy Apps, comparing it with iTunes App Store will be sin.

Happiness:

* The phone boots fast.

* Really has a good battery life(after use of continuous WiFi, still it showed 3bars)

Pain:

* Nokia N79 looks like Rakhi Sawant( i.e super ugly and stupid)

* Symbian sucks (No explanation required)

* Camera sucks

* Don’t care to ask about ngage(worthless)

* Ovi looks like toy store.

* Keypad is cramped and D button sensor(simply copied from iPod’s click wheel)

* I cannot take anymore……

Conclusion:

After using this phone, I was really disconnected, today I hardly used twitter or facebook, checking mails on N79 was too much pain. My fingers were painful at the end of day after using the cramped keypad. Only good thing I found that it was less distraction for me than the iPhone, for which I was able to study more by keeping a phone near my side. Now, I really miss my iPhone and all it’s Apps, iPhone here I come…

As someone who was born and has lived his entire life in India, piracy has been a part and parcel of everyday life for me. From using a pirated copy of Windows and pirated games on the first PC I ever used to never having to purchase any song to listen to it and from renting shoddy pirated copies of Bollywood movies at a charge of Rs. 10 per day to downloading all sorts of pirated content off the Internet, I’ve done it all. And there was a time when I had no idea that you were actually expected to pay for this stuff.

But then I grew up. And I learned the concept of intellectual property and how software, movies, songs and books were all supposed to be bought for real money. I found out that they weren’t actually free. This knowledge didn’t prevent me from pirating said content but it sure made me realise that what I was doing was wrong. And it made me feel guilty.

Once I started writing for Macworld and had a relatively steady stream of income, I made a conscious decision to eliminate piracy from my life as much as possible. And, for the most part, I did. There are still some things where I have to resort to piracy in order to acquire them but not for a second have I ever thought that what I’m doing is right. I know that piracy is wrong and, just as the addition of Macworld to my life helped me stop pirating certain things, I intend to completely stop doing it in future when I earn enough to be able to do so.

Until then, I have to live with the guilt that I’m doing something amoral. But, thankfully enough, I at least have no qualms in admitting that to myself and others. There are some people, on the other hand, who actually seem to think that there’s nothing wrong with indulging in piracy. Their logic is that if something is too expensive for you to be able to afford it, it gives you the right to pirate it.

Now read that last sentence with the word “steal” substituted for “pirate”. When taken out of context, it sounds ridiculous, right? If you own an apparel retail store, would you stand for the logic that customers who think that the clothes you sell are too expensive have the right to pick them off the shelf and walk away without paying for them?

“Oh, but that’s blatant thievery,” you exclaim. Well, my dear friend, so is piracy. If you transferred a song off your friend’s phone over to yours, you just stole something. And if he hadn’t purchased it legally, either offline or online, then he is a thief as well. Would you steal a Honda City if you didn’t have the money to purchase it? More importantly, do you think it’s justified that you should be allowed to do so?

If not, why shouldn’t the same apply for intangible items that, although you cannot touch them in the physical world, require similar amounts of labour and money in order to be made and brought to you?

So, what prompted me to publish this tirade today? It was a series of tweets by popular Indian author Chetan Bhagat and the astonishing replies to them that pushed the proverbial button. Here’s what Mr. Chetan tweeted:

almost anyone who is reading my pirated books can afford the original. It hurts me a lot personally. Just sharing.

Piracy kills publishers, esp domestic literature. Gives incentive writers to move westwards. Don’t do it if you care for Indian creativity.

At a broader level, a society that doesn’t respect intellectual property never excels at innovation. See what kind of India u want.

See what I mean? These tweets do not offer the defence, “I’m sorry, I am a student and I wish I could purchase these things but I just do not have the money to do it right now.” (Partly because that’s a really shitty defense for pirating books that have a retail price as low as Rs. 99.) No, their defense is, “There’s nothing wrong with piracy. I have every right to spend as little for something as I possible can, irrespective of whether what I’m purchasing was stolen or not.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these people were real-life criminals as well. And yes, Mr. Joji, purchasing a stolen car for Rs. 10,000 makes you just as much a criminal as the thief who sold it to you. If you disagree with that, you have a very poor understanding of the law. Either that or you just choose to overlook it because, hey, as long as it saves you money, you’ll do anything you have to, right?

Here’s the thing: I’m not one of the greatest fans of Chetan Bhagat’s books. They fall in the category of beginner fiction and I think that I have outgrown it. But when I wanted to read Five Point Someone, I went out and bought myself an original copy at full price. And I then did it again for One Night @ the Call Center. And for all the Harry Potter books and for every other book I own.

If your financial situation allows you, please stop doing piracy and supporting piracy. If not, at least have the cojones to admit that what you’re doing is wrong. Stop giving lame-ass arguments to support your stupid viewpoint. It’s like they say, “Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt”.

Today marks exactly one year since the Bombay terrorist attacks.

We happened to be sitting a little late in office that cold November night here in London when one of us just happened to put on the BBC and there were reports that there was a bit of gunfire in one of the posh hotels in Bombay. Thinking nothing of it, we just wrapped up things and went back home.

How wrong we were.

It was horrible watching it all unfold in front of you, live on TV, Twitter, etc. These were the same places that I had been to, the same hotels that I had stayed at on more than one occasion. It made my stomach turn to knots.

What made things even worse was the fact that I could not get through to one of my friends who lived pretty close to that area. (Turns out his battery had died and he was hiding out at a friends place).

I don’t even know what to write here that will try and express how I feel. I think it’s something similar to the way Americans feel about 9/11.

I just hope that something like this never happens again anywhere in the world.

I’ve been contemplating writing something about it all day… but I just don’t know what to say.. and so I’m glad you made a post about it.. and now I can reblog it…

From my childhood, I have been seeing Windows computer and have grown with them, but recently after the launch of iPhone(1st Gen) my mindset has totally changed, now days looks matters so much for me.

I have been so much inspired by Apple, that now I am totally a Apple Fanboy with Macs, iPhone and iPod all around. I have just fallen in love with the word ‘creativity’, when I hear this word or see it in some one I really get excited.

After I joined university few months ago, I just realized that each and every guy in my college or class are so much study centric that they don’t have time to care about nourishing their creativity, but by luck I found a girl named Ankita Chandra and was simply impressed by her, the way she introduced herself as a painter and creativity was just flushing on her eyes.

After talking with her yesterday for quite a long time, I found that she is not a web designer but only a artist(only works on pencil and paper), but she has skills of using Photoshop, GIMP and other image editing softwares, though from the talk I wasn’t clear what she really wanted to do in her life, but somehow I felt that she is also going to dump her creativity for a boring career. But she has told me that she will help me in enriching my creativity and will give feedbacks on my work, I am just keeping my finger crossed and hoping that someday I will also be counted as one of the famous web designer, animator or an iPhone App developer.

(NB: Do not even come to conclusion that, we both have any extra relationship between us except being friends, sorry need to write this for some cheap minded people out there.)

My First Day at College

I was really kind of excited for this day, I woke of late at 8 am (as I was watching the Apple Rock & Roll event keynote), got freshed and quickly came to my P.C and installed iTunes 9 and updated my iPhone software to 3.10.

I had no time to see what was new in it, As I had to prepare for my college, so I opened my Physics book & just had a look over on the first chapter. Then I took bath and had breakfast+lunch(yea combo) & got ready for my college.

As, today I had only half class from 1 to 4pm, I reached college by 12:15 pm, I went inside, saw one of my old friend and I started to search my block where the classes were going to start. By that time I got scolding from a professor for roaming in college corridor(god help those old bullshits) he told why are you wearing Jeans pant etc… , then it took 15 mins to find my class, obviously the college is too huge for me. First class was English for Communication(EC), the class was good, then Chemistry that was also good, Chemistry mam finished half of Thermodynamics chapter in a hour, the last period was Maths, the professor looked like he has not eaten anything for years and his class was total bore, I really died in boredom.

At last, I was quite not happy about the first day at college, with so much restrictions from senior’s and I really felt frustrated in 3hrs, hoping tomorrow might be better. You must be wandering which ~~college~~ University I have joined, it is ITER.

No Up-to-Date Program outside North America

I was quite happy to learn that, Apple will launch their Mac OS X Snow Leopard on ~~September~~ Aug 28(atlast few rumors came true), but the moment of happiness was short lived.

When I called Apple India, they said they have no knowledge when will it launch and no idea about the price and other things(as usual). And the other thing I saw in Apple website was Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program and was very angry to learn that, it is only valid for US and Canada, why doesn’t Apple see’s the world as a market, only conservative mind, which cannot think outside of North America.

I can remember the article, written by one of my friend Aayush Arya, it really reflects the condition Apple is in. If Apple is not going to face the reality, it is sure that, it will loose business in other parts of the world. One thing Apple needs to do, is to think out of the box on subject of marketing.

Why I hate Nokia ?

When I was 13 years old, my papa brought his first cell phone, Samsung True i (2003). In that time, that phone was a awesome phone, and from that day, my interest on cell phones started. I was amazed to use it and nearly after 3 years, it was no more usable. So my papa got a new one same Samsung SGH E730, it was quite suitable for my papa, but he lost it. Again another phone now it is Nokia N81,I started liking it for few days, installed many 3rd party Apps as it was a S60 device, I wanted to test the full power of it, so as we know, it crashed like nothing. And this year, the phone crashed and was totally unusable, it went to Nokia Care and came after a month. In this period my papa got another set Nokia N79. Another crappy and buggy phone from Nokia. It worked well for first two days, and this time I had no Apps installed in it( strict instructions from my papa), and after two days only, the crap started crashing with no good reason, this continued. I am writing this because, presently my papa is in Kolkata for a business meeting and his phone Nokia N81 stopped working.

I think if Nokia doesn’t do anything with their S60 crappy models, it will surely loose the 1st position in the world of being the biggest mobile manufacturer in the world. The Finnish company has no innovativeness with their phone, even N97 is another big crap, only good for social networking. And the coming Nokia X & C series better be good, or else…….

After using the iPhone, I think their is no better phones in the world that I can use and that could have satisfied me. Now I am planning to get Blackberry bold for my father as he doesn’t like to use touch screen phone, better to taste blackberry.

August belongs to me

Ya, you heard that right. August is the month in a year, for which I wait like nothing. I can explain, you why August belongs to me.

I will be listing, some points out here:

My Birthday: As my birthday falls on August 21, so expect something good to happen.
New iPhone: From 2008, every year, Apple will release their new iPhone’s in India on August. This year iPhone 3G S on Aug 9.
Gadget: In the month of August, it is sure that, I will have one more gadget in my gadget list. Ya, it may be my birthday gift.
My Mom’s Birthday: Ya, my mom’s birthday also falls on Aug 21, so it will be a great fun!!! My mom and myself will rule the whole day.

This year I am thinking of custom designing my birthday cake, if you have any idea, just flow them on the comment box. It is special because I will be 18, an adult, allowed to vote, have driving license, can visit all websites, can participate in all contests & a legal drinking age.
